Now that air conditioner season is coming to an end, you might be wondering if it would be best for your unit to be covered with a tarp to protect it from the harsh weather conditions ahead. At Lenz we recommend you leave your unit uncovered. There are a couple reasons that it’s not desirable to cover your air conditioner.
- Moisture
Covering your unit you actually trap the moisture in, creating mold. Mold can not only block proper airflow through your coils, but it can also decrease the efficiency of your air conditioner.
- Pinhole leaks
Increased moisture causes copper to oxidize and create pinhole leaks in the lines having your system lose freon.
- Rodents
Animals wants to get out of the cold, so your cover can encourage them to setup a new winter home inside your unit. This can lead to secondary problems like chewed electrical wires and uninsulated freon lines.
Remember your air conditioner is already built to protect against typical weather conditions. They’re tough! The best way you can treat your A/C unit is to leave it uncovered during the fall/winter seasons and be sure to schedule a Spring A/C check. An expert will come out and clean any debris that may have accumulated as well as making sure it’s ready for the next season for you!
