Troubleshooting Your A/C Before Calling Your HVAC Hero

Why do A/C problems usually happen during a heat wave, when you need your A/C the most? It could be your luck or the fact you only discover problems when running it at max capacity. That’s why system maintenance is so important. Annual Maintenance can allow an HVAC tech to recognize and prevent any issues before the sweltering Summer days. If your A/C won’t turn on or is not cooling properly try these troubleshooting tips before calling an HVAC hero!

 One: Check your thermostat.

  • Make sure your thermostat has power. Replace batteries if needed.
  • Verify it’s set to “COOL” mode
  • Make sure the set temperature is below the current room temperature

Two: Check your air filter.

When your filter gets clogged, it can cause the A/C system to turn off or even freeze up. Make sure your filter is new and change it every month.

Three: Check the circuit breaker.

On old homes this is a ‘fuse box’ while newer homes have a circuit panel. If it’s a fuse box, look for a blown fuse and replace it. On a circuit breaker, look for a tripped circuit and flip it to “off” and then back to “on”

Four: Is your refrigerant line covered in ice?

If you see ice on the copper line that is usually covered in foam insulation connected to your A/C, shut your system off immediately and call a professional.

If after all these steps your system is still not turning on or cooling properly, call us to schedule an appointment!

We do NOT have diagnostic fees or trip charges!
